Call For Closer Defence Links
(New Zealand Preet Aieociationi AUCKLAND, April 25. The threat of China to Australia and New Zealand may not be immediate, but it was undeniably there, and would remain a long time, the Minister of Defence (Mr Eyre) told a large gathering at the Takapuna Anzac memorial service today.
The Pacific' area was our area of survival, he said. “Once our fate was decided in Europe, and our share was only that of a minor partner. Now it is on otir front doorstep where, unless Australia and New Zealand are prepared, our two countries are a pair of ripe plums ready for the picking.” It would be suicidal folly not to do everything possible to protect ourselves and otir friends in the South-east Asian and Pacific areas. Combined training and the
exchange of officers who were specialist instructors recently had been strengthened between Australia and New Zealand. and co-operation between the two countries had improved, but there was much room for more to be done. There were many aspects of civilian and military life in which closer working links between the two countries must come if we were to make ourselves stronger and more secure against the growing threat from the north.
