Passenger May Have Been Missing Girl

Police believe that a girl given a lift on the Main South road from Islington to Rakaia on the night of March 31 may have been Lesley Margaret Soutter, who has been missing from Auckland since March 29.

The girl was with a young man. She was described as aged about 19, between sft sin and sft 6in, with fair hair swept back. She was wearing cream-coloured slacks and a dark-coloured duffle coat, and was carrying a dark-coloured duffle bag. Miss Soutter is described as aged 19, sft sin, of medium build with a good figure. She has very fair hair which is straight and normally tied back, and blue eyes, and wears horn-rimmed spectacles. When last seen, in Auckland at 9.45 a.m. on March 29, she was wearing a longsleeved grey jersey, a grey woollen skirt, and a dark duffle coat with a tartan hood. She had red slip-on shoes with a tartan pattern. The police are making inquiries throughout the country in an effort to trace Miss Soutter. She is a native of Scotland, but has very little accent.

The young couple who were given a lift to Rakaia on March 31 told the person who picked them up that they were going to Dunedin. They were left at Rakaia about 9.45 p.m. The man was described as aged 20 to 25, and slightly taller than the girl. He was of medium- build, with thick, dark hair which was hanging

over his forehead, and spoke in a deep voice. His clothing was dark, and he, too, was carrying a duffle bag. He appeared to be a New Zealander. . Anyone who can give any information about the young man and girl is asked to get in touch with the Christchurch C. 1.8. or the nearest police station. There have been several reports of sightings of Miss Soutter in Christchurch, but these have not been confirmed.
