CARDIGAN BAY HAS EASY WIN

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter) NEW YORK. The New Zealand horse, Cardigan Bay, raced to an easy three-length victory in the 50,000-dollar Good Time Pace, the second leg of the Yonkers three-race international series, yesterday. But there was hardly a cheer as the 10-year-old gelding hit the finishing line of the 50.000 dollar Good Time Pace with a three-length margin over lightly regarded Adora’s Dream.

Cardigan Bay, the world’s fastest pacing gelding, was considered so good that he was barred from the wagering so the track could avoid paying of a “minus pool” (minimum return) as it did last week when he won the 100,000 dollar International Pace. Driven by his trainer, S. Dancer, Cardigan Bay took the lead with half a mile to run, drawing away in the straight to win easily. The 10-year-old gelding ran 2min 34.45ec, three seconds away from his own record for

the mile and a quarter set here in 1964.

Orbiter, another New Zea-land-bred horse, was third, three-quarters of a length behind Adora’s Dream. Duke’s Son was fourth, Adios Vic fifth, Adios Marches sixth and Murdock Hanover seventh, Idaho, also bred in New Zealand, was scratched. Cardigan’s Bay first prize of 25,000 dollars boosted his United States earnings to 510,346 dollars. He also won £36,993 in New Zealand and £24,925 in Australia —the equivalent of 175,366 dollars. This brings his lifetime stakes to 685,712 dollars.
