ORCHESTRAL COURSE
100 N.Z. Pupils To Train
More than 100 of the most promising musical instrumentalists in schools throughout New Zealand will assemble in Christchurch in the first week of the May holidays for an orchestral course under the direction of Mr W. WaldenMills, national adviser on school music for the Education Department. They must have passed grade 5 in Royal Schools’ of Music examinations on the instrument of their choice. Junior and senior orchestras will be formed and rehearsed by leading teachers. A large proportion of those who have taken part in earlier courses have been selected for the National Youth Orchestra or community orchestras throughout the country. The orchestras will give a demonstration concert on Friday, May 13 at 7.30 p.m. in the Teachers’ College hall, including movements of Beethoven’s First Symphony. Trainees will pay their own travelling expenses but they will be billeted in Christchurch. Places are still required for 16 boys.
