Union Official Sees No Need “Shift work is not the solution to waterfront delays in our opinion," said Mr R. K. Fergus, secretary of the Lyttelton Watersiders’ Union, yesterday. “In any case, we would not be interested in it” He was commenting on a recent statement by the chairman of the Overseas Shipowners’ Committee (Mr J. H. Cook), who said congestion at New Zealand ports was the worst for years and wharves would have to be worked more intensively. Mr Fergus said better programming by shipping officials would ease the situation. Frequently one port full while another was |||wLalf empty with men idle.
