Fighting Sulphur Fire

Firemen used breathing apparatus when fighting sulphur on fire in a sulphuric acid manufacturing plant at the Hornby chemical works of Kempthorne, Prosser, and Company yesterday afternoon. Sulphur ignited near a retort in which sulphuric acid was being made, and the sul-

phur dust from the mechanical conveyer was set on fire from the concrete floor to the steel roof frames 60ft above. Firemen from the Sockbum and Headquarters stations answered the alarm at 3.22 p.m. Two firemen, wearing breathing apparatus to protect them from the fumes, used two hose reels to bring the fire quickly under control.

Two other firemen in breathing apparatus stood by. Other firemen were on the iron roof. It took about 90 minutes to put out the fire in all the sulphur dust, much of it lying between the steel framework and the corrugated iron of the roof.

There were no explosions. The fire caused only very slight damage.
