LONDON, April 22.
A man hunted by the police for more than two years will appear in court today—charged with taking part in Britain’s train robbery.
Acting on a tip-off, police swooped on a quiet seaside resort yesterday and seized James Edward White, aged 46. His arrest came two years and eight months after a gang of armed and masked men robbed the Scottish mail train and made the biggest cash haul in crime history, £2,600,000.
For 18 months, White has allegedly lived with his wife and young son in the seaside resort of Littlestone, Kent. He was known there as a popular boat salesman, named Bob Lane.
Today he will appear in Court at Linslade, Buckinghamshire, charged with conspiring to rob the mail, robbing the mail with other persons, and being armed with an offensive weapon.
He is one of three men—the other two are still at large—wanted for questioning about the robbery. Nine men are in prison serving long sentences for their part in the hold-up.
Another two escaped in daring goal breaks and are still being hunted by police.
Most of the haul—about £2,250,000 sterling—is still missing.
