Sumner

Sir, —Now that it has clearly been proved that the City Council owns the Sumner pier—and it has done nothing to remove this eyesore—it has a great opportunity of putting in a tepid salt-water swimming pool between Cave Rock and the pier. Sumner is one of the lungs of Christchurch and swimming pools are being built all over the place and are great assets, not only in providing pleasure for thousands who use them but in bringing business. The pool, if heated, could be used all the year round and do away with any danger from sharks. What has the City Council got to say about it?—Yours, etc., S. HICKMOTT.

April 3, 1966. [The chairman of the.parks and recreation committee of the Christchurch City Council (Cr. P. J. R. Skellerup) says: “A tepid swimming pool would, for economic reasons, need to be somewhat restricted in size, and for maximum use should be covered and situated in a more central part of the city. The City Council has recently completed a paddling pool for use by small children at the Scarborough end of the beach. The old enclosed pools, as at Scarborough and Clifton, had only limited use and do not appear to meet the needs of present-day bathers, who are generally more venturesome. As Sumner beach generally enjoys calm water there is no great difficulty in finding a suitable part of the beach for bathing. Suggestions have been made in the past for an open-air salt-water pool at the foreshore of Central New Brighton and also at McCormacks Bay.”]
