“Masculine” Image
Sir,—ln my opinion a person who is a minister in the church, speaks with a “Pommie accent,” casts doubt upon the value and place of a “half-gee” (empty, I presume) and a game of Rugby, attempts to court a reluctant debutante to the ballet, and brands himself as a lousy lover is not well enough qualified to comment upon New Zealand’s “masculine image.” As a New Zealander (Anglican) who has been fortunate to travel extensively overseas and glad
to return to this favoured country, I believe the male population, as individual citizens, are well developed in body and mind, affectionate and respectful to girl friends, wives, and families, energetic and enthusiastic in their work and play, and proud to fight for the defence of their country or to represent it in any activity. May we continue to live in “a glorious sense of happiness,” honouring all men who created and will maintain it! —Yours, etc., HERCULES. April 22, 1966.
