OPTION FOR OFFENDERS
Army Or Gaol Term (N.Z. Press Association) NELSON, April 21. Military training instead of gaol for minor criminal offenders was suggested today to Nelson Federated Farmers by the Rotoiti branch. The suggestion arose from dissatisfaction with the present “arbitary system” of selection by birthday ballot, which the branch claimed could seriously disrupt seasonal farming work. The suggestion had a precedent before the Second World War, said Mr R. G. McMurtry. Offenders then were given the opportunity of going to the Army or going to gaol. The meeting endorsed a proposal by the chairman, Mr W. C. Wills, that the suggestion be passed on to the Jus- . tices of the Peace Association for consideration. Mr Wills said he doubted that the suggestion would gain much support although it seemed a more satisfactory answer to the labour problem than the present ballot.
