Obituary MR A. J. WICKES
The death occurred in Christchurch on Wednesday of Mr Arthur John Wickes, who until his retirement in 1952, spent 41 years teaching in Canterbury. He was 90.
Mr Wickes was born at Greymouth on February 29, 1876. Between 1879 and 1887 the family moved to Christchurch. When it returned to Greymouth he entered Greymouth School, became a probationer, and later a pupil teacher. He then moved to what is now Kumara District High School. Mr Wickes was sole teacher at Tiniroto (Hawke’s Bay), and at Haurangi, Taranaki, both in 1899. lie was then successively headmaster at Paroa (1899-1901), Blackball (1901-1918), Pleasant Point (1918-1920), Opawa (1920-1927), and Waltham (1927-1932). In his retirement Mr Wickes was a keen gardener. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and a son.
