FENDALTON ROAD

Talks With M.O.W. A sub-committee of the Waimairi County Council is to consult the Ministry of works about proposals before the council for widening Fendalton road. The plan of the county chairman (Mr 0. C. Mitchell) is to have a by-pass road at the Fendalton road-Memorial avenue-Clyde road intersec tion to leave the 1 shops there. The council’s town-planning committee is considering alternative proposals involving the resiting of the Fendalton shopping centre. The chairman’s plan is for the by-pass road, and another scheme, by W. J. Turner, Ltd., is for a new shopping area in part of the block bounded by Memorial avenue, Atara street, Hamilton avenue, and Clyde road. The works committee reported that it had been informed by the Ministry that its application for a grant from the National Roads Board towards the widening of Fendalton road had been declined. “Until Christchurch local reading bodies reach agreement on the regional authority’s master transport plan all applications for grant funds are declined,” said the ministry. The council agreed that the chairman should raise the matter at the next meeting of the district roads council “with regard to the allocation of funds for the various master transport plan works that the council wishes to commence this financial year.”
