Police Arrest Man With Rifle
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 21. Residents of Nile Road, Kelston, tonight heard bumps, a noise like a rifle shot and a woman’s voice shouting “no, no” as police moved to arrest a man at bay with a rifle.
Police warned people in the district to stay in their homes and extinguish their lights. The Armed Offenders’ Squad, led by Detective-In-spector E. G. Perry, and Inspector K. Sykes, arrived in the street at about 9.45 p.m Twenty-five men were sent to the disturbance. As they en circled the house, which was set back from the road, a woman's voice could be heard
shouting from inside the building. One woman living 40 yards away said later she heard a shot ring out as the police took up their positions. She said she believed there were several children as well as a woman In the house at the time. A man, aged 30, will appear in the Auckland Magistrate's Court tomorrow on a charge arising from the incident.
