“The Press” In 1866

April 23 FRANCHISE.—To The Editor of The “Press” Sir, —I have noticed that the columns of the “Press” are always impartially open to the discussion of real social and political grievances, and that on these occasions many individuals and classes whose complaints are sneered at by the rest of mankind, find in you a considerate and eloquent advocate. 1 hope therefore you will allow me to call attention to the unfairness and injustice with which our much vaunted constitution treats the whole of the sex to whiclr I belong, and that you will think our claims for redress worthy of your powerful support. I refer, of course, to the fact, that, however intelligent, educated, and wealthy we women may be, we have no voice in making the laws by which we are governed and .oppressed. J I am induced to bring this subject forward at the present moment, because it

is election time,- and I think the candidates for the Council, ought to be catechised on the subject. . . . People always read what the “Press” says, and if you were to champion our cause, it might have a tremendous effect on the circulation of your paper. We might even get up a Middle-aged Ladies’ Association, which would advertise regularly in your columns. Believe me, dear Mr Editor, Your sincere friend, Julia Strongmind. P.S.—I don’t remember which of the candidates for the Superintendency you support, but if your friend, whoever he is, will get up a Ladies’ Committee, I have no objection to be its President. I’ve worked at elections before, and know all about the ribbons, rosettes, &c. P.P.S.—Would it not be worth Mr Travers’ while to take up our cause: we can influence more votes than the Teetotal Society. J
