Population Moves Shown By Census
(New Zealand Press Association! WELLINGTON, April 21. A spectacular increase in population of 71 per cent from 8043 to 13,754 occurred in Wainuiomata County Town, in a valley adjoining Lower Hutt, between 1961 and 1966, the latest census figures released by the Statistics Department show.
Large increases as a result of housing development also occurred in Howick borough (43.6 per cent from 6303 to 9179), Richmond borough (31.4 per cent, from 3482 to 4575), and Featherston Borough (24.9 per cent, from 1476 and 1843). Biggest fall shown in the latest figures is 15-9 per cent for Mangaweka County Town (333 to 280). Hampden Borough dropped 14.2 per cent (303 to 260) and Hobson County in the far north dropped 9.1 per cent (6366 to 5788). Other figures released, with the 1961 population in parenthese, were: Mackenzie County (3310) 3286, down 0.7: Fairlie County Town (844), 834 down 1.2; Great Barrier Island County (243) 316. up 30.0; Huntly Borough (4633) 5401, up 16.6: Te Kuiti Borough (4492)
