Otago Sweeps Ahead In Universities Tournament

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN. Scoring wins in the swimming, basketball, water polo and shooting contests yesterday in Dunedin in the New Zealand Universities Easter Tournament, Otago swept into an unassailable lead for the Tournament Shield.

With only tennis, where Victoria is a certain winner, and the cricket contests to be completed, Otago has scored 52 shield points, with Canterbury in next place 28 points behind.

There could be a battle for second place between Canterbury and Victoria, which is only two points behind in third place. Victoria will take eight points for its tennis win while Canterbury’s hopes of finishing runner-up rest on the performance of its cricket team in the final match against Otago today. Canterbury leads Otago in the cricket competition by a single point and a win would leave it still ahead of Victoria. THREE RECORDS Individual highlight of the day’s sport was provided by Victoria’s R. Walker, who set three new swimming records. In the morning session he lowered the 220 yards freestyle with a time of 2min 11.5 sec, which was 7.3 sec inside the previous best. At night, Walker carved o.7sec off P. Hatch’s 110 yads freestyle record set in 1963 with a time of 59.25ec and then went on to lower the record he set earlier at the meeting for the 220 yards medley with a swim of 2min 30.8 sec. In spite of Walker’s outstanding performances, Otago retained the swimming shield with ease, finishing with a lead of 33 points from Victoria with Auckland in third place. The home university had already won the water polo before yesterday’s matches which decided the minor p-lac-ings on>ly.
