Surprises In Fours Post-Section Play

Some favoured names departed quickly when the post-section play in the Easter Fours tournament was held yesterday afternoon.

K. G. Murray (Opawa), N. McNab (R.S.A.), M. Yugovich (Beckenham) and M. Lawson (Sydenham) all lost their first round matches. Lawson’s rink, the only team to have gained eight wins in section play again proved the adage that winners of tournaments come from teams that have lost a game. His defeat was an aftermath of an odd situation. When the original draw for the post-section play was made Lawson was given a bye. But T. Dixon (South Brighton), a player not in the draw, turned up at Morrison avenue with the information that he had won six games and thus qualified. A check of the records showed that Dixon was right and one of his wins had been recorded as a loss. He was drawn to play Lawson and won 26-15. L. Newton (Dallington) who had beaten Murray on the last end of the eighth round to gain his qualification won his first round game in the post section play when he beat Bennett (Fendalton) but Bills (Christchurch W.M.C.), another who had narrowly scraped through, lost by one point to the competent Burwood four skipped by S. E. Lawson. The defeat of McNab was one of the major surprises. His R.S.A. four won the champion of champions fours but he found R. Ward (Shirley) just that little bit more consistent and lost 16-17. The tournament will continue today when the winners of the first round meet at 9

a.m. at Morrison avenue and the second round winners at noon. Results were: Section 1 Seventh Round. Brown tOpawa) 16. Cornelius 14; Thomas 28, Gray 10; Pirrie 21, Miller 10; Blakeaway 12.
