CLIMBERS’ COURSE

Heavy Rain At Mount Cook (From Our Own Reporter) TLMARU, April 10. A total of 5.95 inches of rain fell in the Mount Cook area for the 48 hours to 9 a.m. on Sunday, according to the Mount Cook National Park Board's chief ranger (Mr M. L. Burke). The rainfall from 9 a.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday amounted to 2.5 inches. The weather turned cold on Saturday night, with continued heavy rain (3.90 inches for the 24 hours to 9 a.m. on Sunday), the winds swung to the south-west, with heavy cloud on the mountains, and the snow level was down to 4000 feet, Mr Burke added. Mr Burke said the 37 members of the Federated Mountain Clubs’ group based at the Ball hut would have been restricted in their activities because of the weather, and that it was possible the course had been confined to some form of instruction in the hut.

There were an additional 16 climbers in the Mount Cook area, but most were expected to have returned to base by late evening, said Mr Burke.

There were two climbers at the Malte Brun hut, nine at the Mueller, two at the Hooker hut, and three climbing in the Mount Sebastopol area working from park headquarters.
