ANNIVERSARY MARKED

Nth. New Brighton School Nearly 400 persons attended a banquet in Cowles Stadium on Saturday evening as part of the North New Brighton School fiftieth anniversary celebrations. Yesterday afternoon a special service was held at the school and an extra 100 chairs had to be provided. The chairman of the jubilee committee (Mr K. S. Bradbury) welcomed past pupils on Saturday afternoon. Other speakers were the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning), Mr J. Mathison, M.P., Mr E. F. Wilde, representing the Canterbury Education Board, and the headmaster (Mr A. M. Grigor). Miss Olive Hunt, who was the second teacher at the school, rang the bell, and Mrs Trolove, the first teacher, called the roll of first-year pupils. The Sunday service was conducted by the Rev. P. B. Ramsay and the speaker was the Rev. G. A. Smith, both past pupils. The Old Testament lesson was read by Mr R. Noonan and Denise Montgomery, a present pupil, read the New Testament lesson. The celebrations will finish tonight with a ball at the Winter Garden.
