Semloh Narrowly In Stakes
Semloh followed second platings at Methven and on the first night of the current Easter meeting with a narrow win over Killadar in the New Zealand Welcome Stakes on Saturday. The race was roughly run, but the first two to finish escaped serious trouble.
Semloh received the run of the race behind Killadar and got up in the last stride or two to> win by half a head. Trained at Templeton by F. E. Newfield for Mrs N. Holmes, of Methven, Semloh is a colt by Morano from Little Jan. half-sister by First Lord to Rupee winner of this race in 1952. Killadar set a very easy pace in the middle stages, and when the leading bunch packed after passing the six furlongs, several horses, including Montage, Stewart Hanover and Alandria met trouble.
Really Good joined Killadar in the back straight and they led for home ahead of Semloh,
which was clear of Stylos. Montage, Lilly Anne and Stewart Hanover. Semloh pulled out inside the furlong and fought on best to gain a narrow win. Killadar was a length in front of the unlucky Montage, which was forced over extra ground and checked at least twice. Stylos paced a sound race for fourth, a length and a half back, a neck in front of Stewart Hanover, with a length and a half to Really Good, and a long gap to Lilly Anne at the head of the others. Cardinal King. Renata. Fort Nelson, Pro Consul, Authentic, Really Good, Lilly Anne and Johnny Kawa were among those to lose ground at the start.
