UNBEATEN MR MINK EQUALS RECORD
"The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND. Mr Mink left several reputations tarnished when he beat eight opponents in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes at Ellerslie on Saturday. None could catch him over the last two furlongs. Those beaten included Valiant Rebel, which looked good during the height of the summer, and the star of the spring, Prince d’Amour. Vali-
ant Rebel ran with Mr Mink for half a mile before falling to fourth. Prince d’Amour was only seventh. Mr Mink produced such brilliant speed in training at Takanini on Thursday, and his racing form was no less striking. He gathered top speed in a few strides and continued at a great pace all the way to the post. Unpainted ran after him gamely for her second, and Felix Dee hung on for third, but they were two lengths and a half away.
Mr Mink has now won five times in five starts and will be favourite for the Wills Championship Stakes next Saturday. In the Great Northern Champagne Stakes he covered six furlongs in Imin 11 l-ssec the equal of the race record held by Estimate and Yahabeebe. Mr Mink is a brown colt by Copenhagen II from Lady Mink (Soaneo —Minko), raced by his breeder, Mr V. D. Wells, of Pungarehu, and Mrs Wells. He is trained at Hawera by B. F. Deacon.
