APIA WHARF TROUBLE

Ships Moved From Mooring (Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) WESTERN SAMOA April 10. There is mounting public speculation in Western Samoa that Apia’s new £BOO,OOO deepwater wharf is wrongly sited. Last Friday, after breaking three of its mooring lines, the Matua was moved from the wharf to a harbour anchorage. On Wednesday night the Waimate also broke its mooring lines and was shifted from the wharf. On Thursday the Oriental Queen, expected to be the first cruise ship to berth at the new wharf, did not tie alongside but anchored in the harbour. This led to a broadcast statement on Thursday night by the Minister of Marine (Mr F. C. F. Nelson) that the wharf was safe, but mooring lines of sufficient strength had not yet arrived.
