REFEREE RIGHT

Player Took Boots Off On the strict application of the law, the referee who stopped Waterside’s half-back, W. Rodger, from playing in stockinged feet at English Park on Saturday was correct. With less than two minutes to go Rodger lost a boot in a goalmouth struggle with the High School Old Boys forwards. He whipped the other boot off, tossed them both to the side of the goal and Intended to carry on without them. However, the referee, Mr V. van Oudheusden, ordered him to put his boots on. Before Rodger had done so, the whistle sounded to end the match. Although international soccer laws do not state that boots have to be worn (several national teams play in bare feet), a referee can rule as Mr Oudheusden did when only one or two players attempt to play without boots while the rest the players are wearing them. But whether this was necessary with two minutes remaining is another matter. Madrussan Injured The young left-winger, F. Madrussan. may have lost his chance of making his last appearance for Canterbury before he leaves next month for a year’s holiday in Italy. Madrussan fell awkwardly and wrenched a muscle during the Christchurch City-Technical 0.8. match on Saturday, and was replaced by R. Bruce. Madrussan left with the Canterbury senior team when it travelled to Nelson yesterday, but his place is likely to be taken by the twelfth man, C. Jones (Technical).
