Third Illegal Entry

fN.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 8. A Fijian Indian who in the last three and a half years has been deported from New Zealand twice appeared before Mr R. D. Jamieson, S.M., yesterday charged with unlawfully landing in New Zealand. Ashraf Raza, aged 23, a planter, pleaded guilty and was convicted and fined £5O,

and ordered to be held in custody pending deportation. Mr J. H. F. Larsen, for the Immigration Department, said Raza was recognised by a person who knew him to have been deported twice before. He was later arrested. Mr Larsen said Raza came to New Zealand in November. 1961, with a valid permit and eventually left again although he overstayed eight days. In October, 1962, despite the fact that he could probably have got another permit to come to the country, he stowed away and managed to elude detection. In October, 1964, he mar-

ried a New Zealand girl although both knew at the time that there was a warrant out for his arrest. He was arrested in Wellington in December, 1964. When it became known that he had been convicted on a charge of theft in Auckland in 1963 as well, an order was made for his deportation. Two months later he again stowed away and landed on April 15, 1965. By May 21, he was back in Fiji having been deported a second time. Mr Larsen said that Raza had been able to accumulate enough capital to bribe seamen.
