MELANESIAN RULE

‘lndependence Not Near’ (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 8. The people of Melanesia, about 2000 miles north-west of New Zealand, were awakening to the benefit of education and moving towards selfgovernment, the Bishop in Melanesia (the Rt. Rev. A. T. Hill) said in Wellington yesterday. V Bishop Hill, whose diocese includes the Solomon, Santa Cruz and New Hebrides islands, was on his way to Dunedin to attend the Anglican Synod. “The policy in Melanesia is to build up an indigenous church and lead the people slowly to self-government,” Biship Hill said. But independence was a long way off, he said. “It’s anyone's guess when it will come, but 1 feel the Melanesians don’t wont to be rushed. Before they become I independent they have got to build up an economy,” he said.
