FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A mild north-westerly airstream flowing between a small anti-cyclone north-east of the North Island and a deep depression over the South Tasman Sea. Forecast.

Canterbury and the Kaikoura Coast. Moderate to fresh north to north-west winds; rain in the alps, heavy at times; elsewhere mainly fine and mild. Outlook: More rain in the alps; elsewhere partly cloudy.

Central Marlborough, the Sounds and Nelson. —Moderate to fresh northerly winds, strong in exposed places about Cook Strait; cloudy with scattered areas of light rain; mild temperatures. Outlook: Unsettled, with persistent rain. Buller and Westland.—Moderate to fresh northerlies; overcast with rain; mild temperatures. Outlook: Rain.
