Good School By Grant

"The Press” Special Service INVERCARGILL. The highlight of a restricted morning’s schooling at Riverton yesterday was a dashing round by Grant, which jumped 10 fences in a solo run in brilliant style. Grant is not engaged on the first day of the Riverton meeting but he is to run in the Riverton Steeplechase on the second day. Ridden by J. D. Crawford, Grant jumped the brush fence in front of the stands as a lead to the sod wall. He set a solid pace and took his fences in his stride, finishing up by jumping the water jump, a brush fence for the second time and the sod wall again—10 fences in all. Grant Is now into the veteran stage but he has lost none of his brilliance and his schooling run was as good as any on the course during the week. Captain Morgan and Melotone were on terms well clear of Big Bluff in a run over 10 fences of the steeplechase course. Captain Morgan outjumped Melotone at the double down the back but otherwise there was little between them. Big Bluff did better when warmed up to his task. He will be ridden in the Waiau Steeplechase by S. Jones.

Tara HUI, Tidal Rip and Myfilou completed a round of 10 fences in sound style. Myfilou left the impression that he will make good over country. His first day programme is in doubt, as he may be reserved for the hack steeplechase on the second day.

Tidal Rip gave a first-class display but lack of racing may be against him in his Easter engagements.
