430 Still To Wait ■ Christchurch’s waiting list for telephones will be reduced greatly from May 13. [when the new Harewood exchange will come into use. As ;a result of that and extensions iat other exchanges 1240 of the 1670 persons at present awaiting connexion will have telephones. The extensions will be at the Beckenham, Halswell, Islington, New Brighton, and Shirley exchanges, and there will be relief at the exchanges in Papanui. Fendalton, and St. Albans and, to a lesser extent, Riccarton. Associated with the new exchange and the extensions will be about 12.000 changes of numbers in the districts affected. The Harewood exchange has been built and connexions provided at a cost of £280.000. It is the next stage in the development of the Christchurch telephone service, which so far this year has had 2300 new connexions, a higher rate than usual.
