TROTTING Wendy Dawn’s Sound Trial At Addington
Wendy Dawn recorded a most encouraging trial for her two-mile heat of the the Royal Easter Cup on Saturday when she worked solo at Addington Raceway yesterday morning. She worked about 15 feet out from the rails in very cold weather. Rain fell later in the morning, but the track was not affected.
Wendy Dawn worked keenly throughout two miles in 4.25. She was pacing easily at the finish after recording 1.3 for her last half-mile and 30 1-5 for the final quarter. She looks improved by her race on Saturday when she
finished third to Lordship and Cloudy Bay. She will appreciate the longer distance in this week’s heat and will be a sound prospect in the second leg of the T.A.B. double.
Bobbinet made the pace for Our Eileen, Lonesome Valley and Great Adios in an easy run over two miles. The pace quickened a shade over the last half-mile which took Imin 4 4-ssec, and the final quarter 29 4-ssec. Bobbinet finished half a length in front of Our Eileen and Lonesome Valley, with a length back to Great Adios, which made up ground over the last furlong and a half. They took 4min 48 4-ssec for th„ two miles.
AU four worked pleasingly, particularly Our Eileen, which trotted an unaccountably poor race on Saturday. She hit out much more smoothly in her work yesterday, and couid make amends on Saturday. Bobbinet has not drawn Robin Dundee’s heat this week. She has finished second to her in her last three starts.
Lonesome Valley has drawn the same heat as Bobbinet, which will again be driven by F. Smith. M. Holmes has been engaged for Lonesome Valley. Stakes Rivals
The New Zealand Welcome Stakes rivals Montage and Fort Nelson went easily over 12 furlongs in 3min 29sec. They speeded up over the last half-mile in Imin 4sec, and the last quarter in 30 l-ssec, with Fort Nelson finishing boldly along the inside to be on terms with Montage. Fort Nelson missed the start in his race last week and there was merit in his fourth placing.
The New Zealand Trotting Stakes candidate, Doctor Scott, went quite well over 12 furlongs on his own in 3min 29 l-ssec, the last quarter in 33 l-ssec. He is improving with each run. Southern Rev, which made the pace, was on terms with Prince Garry and Major Bright at the end of an easy 12 furlongs in 3min 29sec, the last half-mile in Imin 6 2-5 sec, and the final quarter in 3 Isec.
Lady Charles and Happy Songster, which again worked lazily, took 4min 33sec for two miles, the last half-mile in Imin 3 l-ssec, and the final quarter in 29 3-ssec. Happy Songster was a rather unlucky sixth on the first night
of the meeting and he could make amends in the Plains Handicap this week. Carefree, which is booked to race at the Kurow meeting on Saturday week, took 2min 42 4-ssec for the last 10 of 12 furlongs. He sprinted his last half-mile in Imin 3 4-ssec, and the final quarter in 31sec. He will only have to reproduce his track trials to be an early winner. Idle Man went over 12 furlongs on his own in 3min 19 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 60 4-ssec, and the final quarter in 30 2-ssec. Only rarely has he reproduced his track trials in his races.
Merry Morning knocked a knee in the Rattray Handicap on Saturday night. He is very tender and is to be returned home. Garry Dillon, which has proved difficult to keep sound since his return from the Inter-Dominion Championship series in Sydney earlier in the year, joined C. McDonald’s Papanui team after racing on the first night of the Easter meeting.
