Assurance Sought On Troops’ Use
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 5. The Wellington Committee on Vietnam is seeking an assurance from the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) that New Zealand troops will not be used to help suppress the Vietnamese riots.
A letter to the Prime Minister says that in the absence of any form of elected government or civil liberty, riot is the only way in which the Vietnamese people can rrake their will known. “They are doing this in spite of threat of court martial, public execution; teargas. armed riot police and paratroopers. Their courage is to be admired.” the chair-
- man of the committee (Mr B. , I Metcalfe) told a meeting of ; about 60 people in Welling(ton last evening, according to 1 a statement issued today. > “The labelling of those pro- > tests as student or ‘Communist’ is precisely the same techi nique as that used here - against the committees on ■ Vietnam.” Mr Metcalfe said. I Mr Holyoake said today he > had received such a letter ■ from the committee.
