TOWN HALL FUND
Gift Of £5O By Society The Royal Christchurch Musical Society last evening decided to give £5O to the Christchurch town hall fund. The president (Sir James Hay) and conductor (Mr E. R. Field-Dodgson) had both said that a town hall would benefit musical activities in Christchurch. They spoke to about 100 members attending the society’s 106th annual meeting. Sir James Hay said that the society had a longer history of continuous activity than any other society in New Zealand. He congratulated members on their work, mentioning their contribution to the PanPacific Arts Festival in February, 1965, and said he hoped the society would take a prominent part in another Christchurch arts festival in 1970. This is to be run in co-operation with festivals in Perth, Adelaide, and Auckland. Mr Field-Dodgson said the society’s programme for the coming year would include a performance of Orff's “Carmina Burana” at Canterbury Court in December. This would be conducted by Juan Matteucci as part of a series of New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation youth concerts.
Other public performances are to include Elgar’s “Dream of Gerontius,” Bach’s St Matthew Passion, and Beethoven’s Missa Sotemnis. Officers elected were: President, Sir James Hay: secretary, Miss E. M. Brooks: treasurer, Mr C. H. McLachlan; honorary auditor, Mr R W. Rofe; honorary solicitor, Mr B. J. Drake; librarian. Mrs S. W. Sands: committee. Messrs P. D. Barton, N. H. Buchanan. E. P. Clacey, P. C. Graham, R. C. Landery, C. G. A. Sams, and G. Thorpe.
