Tear-Gas Used On Negroes
(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) LORMAN (Mississippi), April 5. State troopers used tear-gas to flush brick-throwing students out of a dormitory at an all-Negro college yesterday, and a company of National Guardsmen occupied the grounds to prevent further violence.
At least 35 Negroes were arrested during the day. Several officers, gathered to halt a civil rights march, received minor injuries when students began flinging bricks and bottles at them from the dormitory windows. Police drove the Negroes out of the dormitory with tear-gas.
Later in the day Negro youths continued to hurl rocks and scuffle with officers patrolling the campus. Most of those arrested, police said, were Negro teenagers and only a few were college students.
A National Guard infantry company was sent in from Natchez to assist the 180 State troopers in town. A new shipment of tear-gas was flown in. Last night a Negro leader, Charles Evers, tried to take about 300 non-student Negroes on to the campus, where Negroes have been protesting alleged school discrimination against teachers and students involved in civil rights. But about 75 State troopers barred the campus gate and told the Negroes it was not safe for a night march. The Negroes turned back without incident.
