PUNISHMENT BY DEATH
Canadian House To Vote (N.Z.P.A -Reuter—Copyright) OTTAWA, April 5. The Canadian Parliament was due to vote tonight, after four days of debate, on a resolution to abolish capital punishment. The resolution would amend the criminal code to abolish the death penalty no matter what the crime and substitute mandatory life imprisonment. It also stipulates that there would be no parole for anycne serving mandatory life imprisonment except after review by the Cabinet. The Liberal Government of the Prime Minister, Mr Lester Pearson, has commuted all death sentences since it came to power three years ago.
Doctors Stop.—ltalian hospital doctors went on a fourday strike today as the country faced a series of work stoppages by miners, steel workers and insurance clerks in support of demands for higher wages and new work contracts. —Rome, April 5.
