UNIVERSITY GAMBLERS

Big Stakes Alleged “The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, April 5. Efforts were being made to curb gambling among students at Victoria University, the students’ association president (Mr M. Boldt) said. He was commenting on an article in the student newspaper, “Salient,” which claimed the practice was prevalent among some students. Mr Boldt said difficulty in pin-pointing the exchange of money made it almost impossible to catch offenders. Any student gamblers the university authorities apprehended would go before the student union authorities. In serious cases, where large amounts were involved, a student would appear before the university council. The university registrar (Mr L. O. Des borough) said gambling was against regulations. If evidence established that students were offending disciplinary action would follow. According to the ■•Salient” article, card hands of up to £lO had been played on occasions. Hands of £2 were common in some games.
