“The Press” In 1866
April 6 CORRECTION.—We regret to have made the mistake of supposing that Mr. Wynn Williams was the legal adviser of the Ratepayers’ Society. When writing the article yesterday, we had. of course, no recollection that he had stated that he was not acting professionally for that body; we were under the impression that he was engaged in the usual manner. We should have apologised to Mr. Williams for the mistake, had he called our attention to it in the usual way; but. as he preferred to, address a letter to the proprietor of this journal personally,
couched in a style which may be customary in his office but not elsewhere, we feel it quite unnecessary to say more than we have said above. But the fact that this gentleman is acting as a ratepayer and not as an attorney, goes far to explain the absurdities his friends are committing. Whatever respect we might entertain for Mr. Williams’ opinion as a lawyer, we are relieved from any delicacy when we know that he is acting as an amatuer. If cheap law is notoriously bad law, we can readily estimate the value of that which costs nothing. I
