Hockey At Games?
'J' HE initiation of a campaign to gain British Commonwealth and Empire Games status for hockey by the Australian Hockey Association is unlikely to be successful. An application for the inclusion of soccer several years ago was rejected on the grounds that it was a team sport and the Games were intended to test individual achievement. Hockey is likely to receive a similar reply, although it is probably stronger in the Commonwealth'than soccer. At the 1964 Tokyo Olympiad, three Commonwealth teams, India. Pakistan and Australia. finished in the top three places, respectively. Australia recommended that hockey be a scheduled sport from 1970 onwards. As Christchurch has applied for the 1970 Games, and is well supplied with hockey fields and facilities, this application should cause no dismay if it is accepted. However, its chances of success seem slim.
