£l6,000 Needed For Red Cross Projects
' At least £16.000 is required for the Red Cross Society’s special projects for 1966. according to the society's news bulletin. “The Dominion executive has already connnitted the society to a £l7OO project to build a physiotherapy clinic at Nuku’alofa, Tonga, and to provide material for splints and crutches,” the bulletin said. “Other assistance to the Pacific will include shipments of full cream powder for children and expectant mothers, provision of artificial limbs for amputees, and wheel-1 chairs for handicapped people.” A target of £5OOO had been set for these purposes. “Last year Junior Red Cross members gave assistance to a boarding hostel in a particularly poor area of Greece. This year the society has undertaken to build a new wing to the hostel.” It was hoped to raise £2OOO for the wing, which would enable a further 100 children to receive secondary education. The society was financing a technical seminar on relief problems for 16 South-east Asian Red Cross societies, the bulletin said. New Zealand delegates to the seminar, which would be held in Singapore, were the national commissioner (Mr C. McLennan)
and the Dominion treasurer (Mr D. G. Whyte). Also included in this project, for which a target of £6OOO had been set, was the financing of a technical aid plan for the newly-formed ] Malaysian Red Cross Society, aimed at strengthening administration and extending training potential. I Another project was aimed at training leaders for specialised service overseas. “Recently our society has received requests to provide Red Cross experts to serve overseas, but because of lack of funds and suitably qualified personnel, these requests have had to be declined.” There was no target for the project. “It’s simply a matter of the more we receive, the more we can help,” said the bulletin.
