A young British emigrant to New Zealand, Mr Dave Sargent, aged 32, had been invited to return to Britain to help farmers streamline their meat production to the customers' taste, the “Daily Mail" reported today. He had been invited to conduct a two-year project by West Cumberland Farmers, Britain's biggest agricultural co-operative, and Newcastle-upon-Tyne University agricultural economics department. The £lO,OOO investigation was backed by a grant from the Government-sponsored
Agricultural Marketing Development Council. Mr Sargent, a graduate of King's College, Newcastle, with a degree in animal production. was suggested for the job by Professor Cooper, Newcastle’s dean of agriculture, who was himself a New Zealander. Mr Sargent was at present lecturing on farm management in New Zealand. “His qualifications and experience make an ideal combination for a job which covers all aspects of the livestock business from production methods on farms to organisation of marketing and the tailoring of livestock to consumer requirements,” said Mr John Rogers, a senior lecturer in agricultural economics at Newcastle.
