Aranui Now Due Next Month

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 4. When the inter-island ferry Aranui comes into service there wall be a two-ship timetable providing 17 return trips between Wellington and Picton each week.

The Aramoana makes 11 return trips each week. A Railways Department official said today that the new ferry, originally due in December. was now expected to arrive in May. Shortages of skilled labour, bad weather, and industrial unrest at the Newcastle-on-Tyne shipping yard which built the ferry, were the reasons for the delay, he said.

At present the Aranui was undergoing acceptance trials. Once those were completed, preparations for the maiden voyage would be made. Between April, 1964, and March, 1965. the Aramoana carried 206.712 passengers. 45.592 vehicles, and 180.650 tons of goods in railway waggons, a considerable increase on the same services in the previous year.
