£9000 Grant For Jetty At Avarua

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 4. The Government has approved a grant of £9OOO to the Cook Islands for a temporary jetty at Avarua to replace the jetty destroyed by a hurricane earlier this year. It is also considering deepening and widening the coral reef entrance to Mangaia harbour.

The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake), questioned today on the action the Government was taking on requests by the economic mission from the Cook Islands during talks in Wellington late last year, said some requests for either financial or construction aid had been declined and some approved. Referring to the widening of the coral reef at Mangaia, he. said that bef ore a Government decision was made discussions would have to be held at an “engineering level”.

Questioned about a report that the Cook Islanders were unhappy with the amount of aid they received from New Zealand, Mr Holyoake said: “1 have never known them when they aren’t unhappy about something.”

The islands received £BOO,OOO a year as a direct grant from New Zealand, he said.
