‘DISTURBING NOISE’
TV Background Music (N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON N„ April 4. The background music and applause of audiences on television was disturbing to listeners, especially those hard of hearing, the Hard of Hearing League was told yesterday. The New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation will be asked to investigate the possibility of eliminating background music in television productions where the spoken word is essential to convey the message to listeners. These background noises, especially loud noises, were all picked up by hearing aids, delegates said. Excellent lip-reading courses had been seen on television in England by the Auckland tutor, it was said. Australia and the United States also had courses. It was decided to approach the N.Z.B.C. about lip-reading lessons on television.
