LEAGUE TRANSFERS DISCUSSED
The possibility that Rugby League players transferring from one club to another may have to stand down for more than four club-playing Saturdays was discussed at last evening’s meeting of the board of control. The chairman (Mr D. C. Wilson) ruled that the suspension period usually began the Saturday after the transfer was received from the board. He suggested that the player concerned in the discussion, R. M. Tawhai, resign from his former club, Linwood.
In raising the matter, Mr W. A. Whitehead said that Tawhai’s transfer—which was not approved by the board because it had not been signed by the Linwood secretary —had gone back and forth between Linwood and Marist for some time. Mr Whitehead said it was the policy of the Linwood Club not to sign a transfer until the player had sent a written resignation. “Now he has resigned Marist has to send the transfer form back to Linwood, which may not have a meeting for three weeks. Then it has to go back to Marist wh’ch has to approve it and then it is sent to the board. Mr P. Yaxley: The clubs have emergency committees. It was up to the player concerned, said Mr Wilson. "He must have known he would be moving at least two months ago.” Mr Whitehead asked when the suspension period was to start “It should be the first four
playing Saturdays,” said Mr J. H. Machirus. Mr J. Anderson said that Linwood could not clear the player until he resigned. Severely Reprimanded Three players sent off in the senior match between Sydenham and Christchurch, T. Parker and S. Radford (Christchurch) and M. Te Hau (Sydenham), were severely reprimanded by the board. The board endorsed a recommendation from the judicial sub-committee. Manager The deputy chairman of the board (Mr L. P Huston) will manage the Canterbury team which will play West Coast at Greymouth on April 17. The team will travel to Greymouth on the morning of Saturday, April 16, and return after the game the following evening.
