Grant For Wakefield’s Collected Works

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 30. A grant of £lOO has been made from the State literary fund towards the cost of the publication of the collected works of Edward Gibbon Wakefield by Dr. Muriel F. Lloyd-Prichard.

The Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Seath) has informed Mr D. J. Riddiford, M.P. for Wellington Central, that the grant was made in response to his representations on behalf of Miss Irma O’Connor, of Auckland.

Miss O’Connor is a descendant of Edward Gibbon Wakefield and is the author of his standard biography. Dr. Lloyd Prichard is associate professor of economic history at Auckland University. Dr. Lloyd-Prichard is keen to publish a selection of the leading works of Wakefield, which are now out of print These would include “A Letter from Sydney,” “The Punishment of Death in the Metropolis,” “England and America,” “The Art of Colonisation,” “Sir Charles Metcalfe in Canada,” and a section devoted to the famous Durham report.

Dr. Lloyd-Prichard has already received a grant of £475 from the Carnegie Social Science Research Committee. £3OO from the Smuts’ Memorial Fund, Cambridge, and various contributions totalling £159 from the Auckland Savings Bank, the New Zealand Founders’ Society and the Early Settiers and Historical Association of Wei- i lington. The publishers in England require a guarantee of £lOOO to cover the cost of printing and publishing. But for the assistance from! ' the Government the amount required would have been short by £lOO.
