Record Ride May Not Be Ratified
The Christchurch club cyclist, C. B. Fitzgerald, last evening beat the New Zealand record for the flying half-mile by the vast margin—for the distance—of ,ssec.
However, because of technicalities and the fact that the time was not recorded at a recognised meeting, it is believed the performance will
not be recognised as a New Zealand record. The record Fitzgerald’s time beat was one of the nine held by V. L. Newlove (Auckland). Newlove’s 55.65ec, recorded at the Kew Bowl, Southland, in January, is still awaiting ratification. The twilight trials were organised mainly for the benefit of the Empire Games trialists, Fitzgerald, J. H. Cleary and M. W. Litolff. In spite of a blustery and rather cold wind, Cleary and Litolff also had good times for the flying half-mile. Cleary did 56.1 sec and Litolff 57.8 sec. The performances were reversed in the standing 220 yards. Litolff was. best with 16.1 sec while both Cleary and Fitzgerald recorded 16.4 sec.
