“STAY WITH BOAT”
Advice Given By Coroner (N.Z. Press Association! AUCKLAND, March 30. It could not be emphasised too strongly that people in difficulty at sea should stay with their boat, the Coroner (Mr A. D. Copeland) said today. He was giving his findings on the death of lan McDonald, aged 21, a milk vendor, who was lost from an overturned dinghy between Crusoe and Motuihe islands on October 24 last. There had been several cases of loss of life recently, he said, where people had abandoned their boats in an attempt to get help. Witnesses said McDonald and another man were returning in a dinghy to their launch after gathering mussels on a reef. The dinghy was swamped. McDonald left the upturned dinghy and tried to swim to the launch. When he was about 20 yards from the launch he disappeared. His companion, Leonard Andrew O’Hear, stayed with the dinghy and was later picked up.
