14-Year-Old Leads Father To Victory

A 14-year-old P class skipper, N. H. England, skippered his father’s Javelin class yacht to a handicap victory in the Christchurch club’s class racing yesterday.

Conditions were moderate-to-fresh for the racing but the young England, with his father crewing and using the trapeze, sailed with considerable aplomb and skill to handle the large yacht. From a bad start they sailed through the combined fleet to finish within striking distance of the class leader, Spindrift. There was some excellent racing at Lyttelton on Saturday in fresh southerly conditions. As expected, the B class catamarans. Per-Shan and Black Cat, trounced the fleet, the former performing spectacularly. Third fastest was the Flying Dutchman. Gazelle, the Mander brothers having a good race. Wayward again won the Javelins by a good margin, but in the R class there was an upset when Naiad (J. Snelgrove and M. Dent) took honours from Radiant.
