If Mr Z. L. Zlatkoff, owner of the Macedonian Gardens, Waipatu, near Hastings, sees any of the vandals who destroyed his £lOO watermelon crop on Thursday night he will “shoot them with a shotgun.” Mr Zlatkoff, at his market garden on Saturday morning, surveyed the ruined crop of about 250 watermelons which were slashed without any apparent reason by a
group of vandals late on Thursday. The crop is the result of a year’s hard work. Bulgarian-born Mr Zlatkoff said he had come to New Zealand fifteen years ago to find a country with law and order. “But when this happens you’ve got to take the law into your own hands. I’ll have a shotgun ready for the next time they come around,” he said.—(P.A.)
