Seven cars were damaged by vandals in Waihi on Saturday night. In two vehicles the dashboards and instrument panels were torn out, and among the others a steering wheel was smashed, gear levers and indicator levers bent and snapped off and seats ripped.
Three of the cars were parked outside the Waihi police station, but the officers were working at Whangamata when the attacks were made. The other four cars were parked outside the picture theatre in the Main street, well illuminated by street lights. The incident took place between 9 p.m. and 10.30 p.m.
A dairy was broken Into and about 1000 cigarettes and a few tins of
food stolen. The intruder tore a kapok cushion to shreds.
Sergeant G. R. Gillespie, of the Waihi police, said he had not seen a
worse case of vandalism in his 20 years as a policeman.
“It was just straight out destruction,” he said. —P.A.
