ECONOMY RUN
Route Through Haast Pass
A three-day economy run through the Haast Pass is to be held In June by the Ellesmere Motor Club. The 750mile event will be sponsored by Mobil Oil (N.Z.), Ltd. Entries from Ellesmere club members will close on Saturday, and if they are not sufficient the event may become open to members of other ear clubs. All competing cars must be in standard condition, and other rules similar to those applying to the national economy run will also be in force. The run will start on June 4, and on the first day the competitors will travel through Ashburton, Timaru, Waimate. and Benmore to Wanaka, where they will spend their first night. On the second day they will travel through the Haast Pass to Hokitika. If the pass is closed because of bad weather, the cars will use another route. On the last day the competitors will drive to Christchurch through the Lewis Pass.
Progress results will be announced at the end of each day, and in addition to the final miles-a-gallon figures, ten-miles a gallon will also be computed to give an overall winner. The classes will be up to 1000 c.c., from 1001 to 1400 c.c., from 1401 to 2000 c.c., and 2001 c.c. and over. At least three persons—the driver a navigator and an observer —must travel in each car. The Ellesmere Motor Club ii the only car dub in New Zealand to have such an event sponsored.
