One Restaurant Seeking Full Liquor Licence
At least one Christchurch licensed restaurant will be considered by the Licensing Control Commission for a new permit to allow the sale of a full range of liquors. Some other city restaurants are considering applying to the commission, and Others have not applied and do not intend to, from inquiries made on Tuesday evening. The first full liquor licences in New Zealand have already been granted to three Auckland restaurants and one in Wellington. Previously the
restaurants have been able to sell only unfortified wines and beer-
Legislation giving the Licensing Control Commission power to grant the full licence was passed in the 1965 amendment to the Sale of Liquor Act. The secretary of the commission (Mr E. M. Basil-Jones) said in Wellington on Monday that the commission had received about 20 other applications from restaurants in many parts of New Zealand. One or two o< these were then under close consideration.
Restaurant proprietors who received the new permits could sell all types of liquor or any specified types of liqours before and during a meal. No liquor could be sold to customers after they had eaten their meals. Mr Basil-Jones said that once a customer left his table he was not permitted to drink any more liquor. The commission had adopted a fairly high standard of facilities for restaurants applying for the permits. Members received reports from health and fire authorities and inspectors of licensed premises.
